About this course

In the field of workers’ compensation and personal injury, we see emphasis placed on health records, more so than in most commercial insurance cases. In typical rehab care, notes serve to improve continuity of care, inform intervention strategies, support reimbursement, and serve as an account for performance by the professional. However, in the context of workers’ compensation and personal injury claims, these records may also be perused by adjusters, attorneys, independent medical examiners, judges, claims administrators, and other third parties. Ambiguous or over-the-top reports may damage trust in the health care provider’s report, the patient’s report,
and the care plan.

This course is designed for rehab professionals to learn to document workers’ compensation and personal injury cases ethically and soundly. We will look at what sets these cases apart from routine health insurance or out of-pocket cases, the importance of functional details, how to report the cause and development of injury, issues of responsibility, what to include in restrictions and treatment plans, the documentation of progress, plateaus, and the achievement of maximal medical improvement. Also, we will go over what to avoid to present your office in a non-negligent, unbiased way.

Documentation is both a professional responsibility and a legal requirement. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) describes clinical documentation as more than a record of services and payment support; it is critical to the provision of appropriate, comprehensive, person-centered, high-quality care. The Healthcare Providers Service Organization (HPSO) similarly emphasizes that documentation identifies the care or services provided and the patient’s response.

PLEASE NOTE
This course is designed to be informative and does not provide legal
advice. Workers’ compensation and personal injury rules can vary by
state, insurer, employer, and case type involved. Clinics must follow the
law, insurer requirements, employer policies, professional standards,
and clinical requirements for each case.
